Rest In Peace Coach Rollie

Besides North Carolina State Wolfpacks lead by Derrick Whittenburg and Sidney Lowe and coached by the late John Valvano, upset the Houston Cougars with Clyde Drexler and Akeem Olajuwon and coached by Guy Lewis in 1983. The other upset that set the college basketball world afire was when the Villanova Wildcats lead by Easy Ed Pickney, Harold Pressley, Mr. Clutch Dwayne McClain and coached by Rollie Massimino beat a Georgetown Hoyas team lead by 2 B'more superstars Reggie Williams and David Wingate along with Patrick Ewing and coached Big John Thompson on April 1, 1985. The Hoyas were considered invincible by all basketball standards. They had already defeated the Wildcats twice that season although both games were closely contested. Yet no really believed in Wildcat-mania. The Wildcats miracle was simply reaching the final game playing another Big East rival. Heck, many felt that Villanova Wildcats should have been NIT-Bound, not NCAA-Bound. Yet Coach Rollie lead a determined, feisty team that shot a collective 70% from the field to this unbelievable victory. What an upset, what a team, what an accomplishment by this Philly group of streetwise basketball players. Well, Coach Rollie Massimino has passed on to glory today and I say job well-done Coach. You took a team of relative unknowns and made them college champions. For that, you deserve so many accolades but more than that Coach, you coached with passion and a desired determination that rubbed off on your team every game you were involved in. Hey, that next plate of spaghetti and meatballs in Coach Heaven is on John Valvano you main homey just joined you.
