Jermain Wesley Loguen, In His Words, My Voice
On October 4, 1850, Jermain Wesley Loguen came before a meeting in Syracuse, New York to request that the city become a refuge site for escaped slaves. The Federal Fugitive Slave Act had just passed Congress and was signed into law by President Milliard Fillmore. Just as today in 2017 many states and cities are being asked to be refuge locations for illegal aliens. You know that at one time it was illegal to knowingly acknowledge the whereabouts of escaped slaves and not report this fact to the authorities. Just another chapter in the story of "how we got over" and continue on our journey to absolute freedom.
