Great Historical Speeches
Mary McLeod Bethune
What American Democracy Means To Me?
November 23, 1939

As I work towards illuminating the issue of a rising tide of illiteracy facing our black community with Project Uplift Literacy. Whose words better bring the need to be literate than one of the greatest American educators that have ever stepped foot on this planet. Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune was in her lifetime the shining example of leadership, excellence, and black educational achievement for so many of our ancestors. I bring forward her words from 76 years ago that expresses her feeling about American democracy. What a remarkable black woman who rose above life's challenges as a child of parents who were slaves to become an educational institution still honored to this very day.
