The Portable Frederick Douglass, Project Uplift Literacy, In His Words, My Voice, Prejudiced Against
In 1850, Frederick Douglass was attacked in public in New York City for walking with two white ladies on Broadway. He discussed this attack in an article in wrote in 1850.
“We are then a persecuted people; not because we are colored, but simply because that color has for a series of years been coupled in the public mind with the degradation of slavery and servitude.”
