Henry Highland Garnett, Message To Our Enslaved Brothers & Sisters
In His Words, My Voice
Henry Highland Garnett
Message To the Slaves Of America
August 21, 1843
During the period when the acquisition of reading and writing skills was forbidden in this nation. Henry Highland Garnett spoke to a nation of 4 million enslaved blacks to rise up against the oppressor. We must as a people today understand the importance of comprehensive language acquisition. No longer is it acceptable to be illiterate. Our community must demand that each individual is provided with the skills necessary to be able to effectively communicate, read, and write. If our educational institutions are failing at that task than we must be the bridge that allows our young brothers and sisters to pass over and avoid the ills of black illiteracy. I am the Blackman who reads aloud, are you?
